Overview

The X5 has powerful competition like the Audi SQ8, and the Porsche Cayenne, however, the X5 dominates in giving the driver that race/fun factor while looking sporty. The powerful powerplants available satisfy multiple tastes, from a well-powered 3.0L 6-cylinder making 375-horsepower, to the meaner Twin-turbo V8 that powers the M60i and makes 523-horsepower. The X5 M is on a class of its own, generating an astounding 617-horsepower and 553 pound-foot of torque out of its twin-turbo V8 engine mated with an electric motor, appealing to the drivers who want to race around the track and push the limits.

Model Highlights

The X5 comes in one of four different configurations, each with their own drivetrain. Powering the base models is a turbocharged 3.0L 6-cylinder engine making 375 horsepower. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The next trim level up uses the same engine but instead sends power to all-four wheels with the aid of a transfer case sending power to the front wheels. For those wanting a little more power, the top-of-the-line M60i is powered by a V8 twin-turbocharged 4.4L engine that makes 523 horsepower mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid xDrive50e is powered by a 3L turbocharged 6-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor that produces a combined horsepower of 483 horsepower and a 0 to 60 sprint of just 3.9 seconds. The hybrid has an all-electric range of 38 miles and can be charged at home or at public charging stations. The base X5 sDrive40i may be at the bottom of the lineup, but it's far from sparsely equipped. It comes standard with 20-inch wheels, power folding and heated mirrors, a wood trimmed interior, Apple CarPlay, a 10-speaker sound system, SiriusXM satellite radio, a 14.9-inch touchscreen, multiple USB ports, cruise control, keyless entry, automatic climate control, a panoramic moonroof with a 2-piece glass panel, rain sensing wipers, a power liftgate, heated front seats and ambient lighting. The X5 M60i has a more aggressive exterior, with body colored side skirts and wheel arches along with a more aggressive front fascia. It looks far more aggressive and sportier on the outside to go along with its more serious performance goods. In addition to the bigger engine, it also gets a sportier suspension, 20-inch wheels and a rear limited slip differential tuned by BMW's M division. Handling is improved over other versions of the X5, and the M50i should be able to hit 60 mph in under 5 seconds. The X5 M is powered by a 4.4L twin turbo V8 that's capable of a very impressive 600 horsepower or 617 in the competition model, mated to a ZF 8-speed transmission. The X5 M rides on 21-inch alloy wheels with performance tires, adaptive dampers come standard, it has painted calipers and bigger brakes, sport bucket heated front seats, and a heated leather sport steering wheel. Standard safety equipment includes front and rear parking sensors, a lane departure warning system, blind spot warning, forward collision mitigation, rear collision warning, a pedestrian detection system, a driver attention alert and a traffic sign information system. New for 2025 is the lane-change assist feature that allows the driver to confirm a lane change suggested by the X5 by merely looking at the corresponding side mirror and the SUV does the rest.
