Overview

Honda has introduced an evolved version of its popular compact SUV, the CR-V, with a new fuel cell electric variant. The 2026 Honda CR-V e:FCEV is a unique vehicle that combines a hydrogen fuel cell module with a battery electric plug-in charging system, offering the flexibility of both hydrogen fuel and electric power for zero-emission driving. The market for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) remains a niche segment with limited competitors. The primary direct rivals to the CR-V e:FCEV are the Hyundai NEXO and the Toyota Mirai, both of which also utilize hydrogen technology. Honda's blend of plug-in electric and hydrogen capabilities helps it stand out in this very specific automotive category.

Model Highlights

The 2026 Honda CR-V e:FCEV redefines the plug-in hybrid by replacing the traditional gasoline engine with an advanced hydrogen fuel cell system. This innovative powertrain utilizes a 174-horsepower electric motor fueled by two distinct sources: a rechargeable battery providing 29 miles of localized EV range and a hydrogen tank offering an estimated 241 miles for longer treks. By combining these technologies, the CR-V e:FCEV delivers a versatile total driving range of approximately 270 miles while remaining entirely free of tailpipe emissions. Offered in only one trim for this year but it comes fully loaded with a power liftgate, heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, LED headlights and daytime running, 18-inch wheels, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats, driver seat memory, ambient interior lighting, automatic dual-zone climate control, HD satellite radio with a 12-speaker Bose sound system, 9-inch touchscreen, voice activated navigation, adaptive cruise control with traffic stop-go, mobile hotspot, wireless device charging, 4 USB ports, 10.2-inch gauge cluster, and a heated steering wheel. Safety features are abundant with 10 airbags, front and rear parking sensors, active lane departure, blind spot warning, forward and rear collision mitigation, front pedestrian detection, a driver attention alert, and a traffic sign information system.
