The 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) is largely a carryover model with minor updates, with the key update being the introduction of the new Nightshade Edition trim.
The Toyota Prius PHEV greatest strength is its lack of compromise. It offers legendary efficiency without demanding the usual sacrifices; drivers are not relegated to a cramped cabin or minimal cargo room, plus it handles with composure while delivering world-class economy. While the Kia Niro PHEV is its closest rival, the Toyota Prius PHEV remains the benchmark, offering 11 miles of additional electric range, superior fuel economy, and more passing power. Other alternatives are typically larger and more expensive small SUVs, such as the Hyundai Tucson PHEV, Kia Sportage PHEV and Toyota RAV4 PHEV, but the Prius remains the most efficient and price-competitive choice for those prioritizing range and tech.
The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid hatchback is available in four trims: SE, Nightshade, XSE, and XSE Premium, powered by a 2L 4-cylinder engine producing 150 horsepower with 139 lb.-ft of torque, mated to a 2-speed CVT transmission. The addition of the electric motor increases the power to 220 horsepower, with an all-electric range of 39-44 miles and a charging time of 4 hours using a level 2 charger. Standard features include heated side mirrors, LED headlights and daytime running, 17-inch wheels, automatic climate control, an HD satellite radio, a 6-speaker sound system, an 8-inch touchscreen, voice activated navigation, adaptive cruise control with traffic stop-go, mobile hotspot, a 120V AC power outlet, wireless device connectivity, 6 USB ports, and a heated steering wheel. The Nightshade and XSE trims add heated front seats, power driver seat, leatherette seats, garage door transmitter, front and rear parking sensors, rear pedestrian detection, auto-dimming rear view mirror, rear armrest, and 8 beverage holders. The XSE Premium sits at the top of the lineup with a power liftgate, a fixed glass sunroof, 19-inch machined aluminum wheels, ventilated front seats, driver seat memory, an 8-speaker JBL premium sound system, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and wireless device charging. Safety features across the lineup include active lane departure, blind spot warning, forward collision mitigation with left turn assist, rear collision warning, front pedestrian detection, driver attention alert, and front cross traffic warning.
